It seems like every movie that comes out of Hollywood these days is a remake of an old classic. This practice, when done well, delights us, and when done badly, infuriates. However, the truth is that artists have been retelling old stories while adding their own twist for as long as storytelling has existed. We often hear people speak of the "modern version" in opposition to "the original," but many of those stories we imagine to be "originals" actually have their own predecessors. Romeo and Juliet have the 2011 reboot Gnomeo and Juliet, but did you know it has roots in Ovid's Pyramus and Thisbe from 8AD? The Lion King has been famously likened to Hamlet. In this camp, we will examine these stories and others like them to make connections across texts, music, and film and discover what, if anything, is essential to the story!
